ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

All about the dive computer

The appearance of the dive computer was one of the greatest advances in this sport.

This device allows us to dive freely, with the security of being permanently informed about the depth we can reach or the time we have, without fear of mistakes. Next we will deepen a little more in the knowledge of the Dive Computer.

THE OPERATION OF THE COMPUTER

The Dive Computer is based on a totally different concept than the tables; Thus, if with the tables the most important thing is to know the time that the immersion takes, for the computer the fundamental thing is to know the time that remains of it.

All computers work from algorithms, comparing their decompression model with the data obtained during the dive. Currently the most used algorithms are those of Bühlmann and Spencer, followed by those of Haldane, Rogers and Powell.

Thus, the computer bases its operation on capturing a large amount of data; such as the duration of the dive, its depth at each moment and even the temperature of the water, which are used to calculate the level of saturation reached by the diver's tissues at each moment. From this calculation, the device will calculate how long the diver can remain at that depth without the need for decompression or, if this is necessary, what stops will have to be made.

Obviously, the more data we give to the computer, the more accurate the calculations will be.

Likewise, it is convenient to know the most important functions that every dive computer must fulfill. They are the following:

Current depth indication.

Maximum depth reached in the dive.

Depths at which decompression stops should be made.

Indication of the elapsed time of immersion.

Time remaining before decompression is required.

Time that each decompression stop should last.

Total time to spend on the ascent.

Water temperature.

Air management.

Acoustic alarms.

Visual alarms.

Altitude adjustment.

Surface desaturation time.

Interval of time that we must leave before flying.

Immersion simulator.

Battery charge indicator.

Diving diary.

In addition and in case Nitrox is used, there are other functions that we must demand from our computer:

Oxygen content in the mixture.

Partial pressure of oxygen.

Oxygen toxicity.

Finally, comment that currently the vast majority of computers have a PC connection, an important function that will help us to download all the information of the dive to the personal computer; some data on which we can work.

A COMPUTER FOR EVERY DIVER

Before buying a computer, stop and think “what are my real needs?”. The market can blind us with equipment that offers a thousand and one functions, so the most important thing is to be very clear about what our needs are and acquire a computer that covers them, without going to very sophisticated models with which the only thing we will achieve is to complicate ourselves life, without ever getting the most out of them.

So if you are just starting out in the world of diving, we recommend that you buy a simple computer, first of all make sure that it is easy to interpret (surely underwater you will have many other things to worry about). For those who start, it is not bad that your device has alarms that warn you if you exceed the maximum depths allowed.

For those who are experienced divers, the degree of sophistication of the computer will also depend on the level of diving and the time you can dedicate to this activity.

Mainly, we will talk about two types of computers:

Wrist: they only have the data of the dive and the parameters that we ourselves include manually.

Air management: in addition to the above data, they have information on air consumption at each moment of the dive.

There are two types:

Console: connected to the first stage of the regulator through a hose.

Wireless transmission: connected by waves, by a transmitter/receiver system.

This type of air management computer is the most suitable when different successive dives are carried out or for diving in extreme conditions (cold water, currents, work...).

On the other hand, we must know that there are computers with manual activation and others with automatic activation. The latter are activated mechanically when the diver submerges in the water, which is very comfortable; although it has the drawback that a simple sweetening of the device after use will be interpreted as immersion. Manual activation does not have this inconvenience, but it does have the possibility of forgetting to activate the device (although we always think that this will not happen to us...).

TIPS FOR USING THE COMPUTER

Each diver must bring their own computer: in case the data given by the computers is different, we must always be guided by the most conservative.

Check the status of the computer before each dive.

The computer must be viewed vertically, otherwise some computers that have digital numbers may give different readings if not read this way.

Check it from time to time during the dive: it is a good habit to check every so often.

In the event of a trip, it is important that the computer is not kept in a hermetically sealed container, since it could cause an error in its atmospheric pressure sensor that continuously recalculates atmospheric conditions.

It never hurts to carry decompression tables, a watch and a depth gauge in case the computer fails; Anything can happen and prevention is better...

It is vitally important to carry out the periodic reviews recommended by the manufacturer of the device.
